Hwènuxó
The Art of the Fon Folktale
Archive Hwènuxó is a free online database that offers Fon folktales from Benin, West Africa, in French, English, and their original Fongbé audio files. Our collection of folktales spans the regions of Dédomè, Allada, and Abomey. Collected over the course of 11 months on a Fulbright Research Grant by Beninese-American researcher Sophia Hounton, Archive Hwènuxó aims to preserve Fon culture through the valorisation of oral tradition. The archive of folktales highlights Beninese women's voices, with over 70% of tales told by women. Click below to discover our stories.
